Cloud Testing

The cloud is on everyone's lips these days and the everyday life of many companies would be unthinkable without it. Where at that time there were dedicated servers in the company's own premises, today almost all services are outsourced to the cloud. Driven by simplicity and many advantages in terms of system stability and customer satisfaction, there are hardly any companies today that rely on classic solutions. The worldwide turnover in the area of Cloud Computing has increased by 600% in the last 10 years and a strong further increase is predicted for the next years. What Are Cloud Tests?

In the course of the move of many software areas to the cloud, a new aspect now stands out: cloud testing. This is primarily concerned with ensuring the security and functionality of the operated application in the cloud environment, as this often involves some special features. For this purpose, the type of testing is often divided into the following areas:

Testing the entire cloud: The cloud is considered as a whole and tests are performed based on its characteristics. Both Cloud and SaaS vendors and end users are interested in conducting this type of testing.
Testing within a cloud: Tests are performed by checking each of its internal features. Cloud vendors in particular are interested in this type of testing.
Testing across the cloud: Testing is performed on different types of cloud-like private, public and hybrid clouds.
SaaS testing in the cloud: Functional and non-functional testing is performed based on application requirements.

In detail, various software test methods are applied here, depending on the requirements. If the focus is on securing sensitive customer data, then, in addition to classic code reviews, dedicated security tests are also recommended which look in detail at the security-critical aspects of the infrastructure and services and put them through their paces. If, however, the functionality of the application is in the foreground, numerous functional tests such as unit, integration or system tests are recommended.
